Tom served the Air Force Reserve and also the United States Peace corps during the Sixties. During the 70 s and 80s he then built a successful Auto Rental business with National Car Rental Franchises in 7 states. He sold his business in 1981 and purchased a sailboat to sail the Bahamas and Caribbean. The sailing life was fun and exciting, but left something to be desired, so Tom sold the boat and bought a farm in Central Texas. There he was active in starting the first Modern Day Farmers Market in Navarro County Texas. On the farm, he raised Fresh cut Herbs, flowers, specialty vegetables, and Pecans. He also met Karol, his wife to this day, and soon thereafter became a father to Thomas, Whit. As Whit approached school age, Karol and Tom decided he should attend a Waldorf School, and thus ended up on Whidbey Island.
